Hair extensions are a great way to add length, volume, and color to your natural hair. They can give you the look you want without the wait of growing out your natural hair. But how long do hair extensions last?
The lifespan of hair extensions depends on a variety of factors such as the type of extensions you choose, and how well they are maintained.
Clip-in hair extensions are the most temporary option and can last anywhere from a few days to a few months, depending on how often they are worn and how well they are cared for. These extensions can be easily removed and reapplied as needed.
“Weft” type hair extensions, also known “sew-in” hair extensions, can last anywhere from 6 -12 months, however they need to be “moved up” every 6-8 weeks. The lifespan of these extensions is also dependent on how well they are maintained and how often the wearer washes and styles their hair.
Tape-in hair extensions need to be re-taped every 6-10 weeks, and usually last about 9-12 months. These extensions are applied by sandwiching small sections of natural hair between two tape-in extensions. Proper maintenance can help prolong the life of tape-in extensions.
Keratin tip hair extensions, also known as k-tips, can last up to 6 months before new hair is needed. These hair extensions are attached to the hair using a keratin bond and are a more permanent option, however they do not require any maintenance appointments.
I-tip extensions , are a popular method of adding length and volume to hair. These extensions are attached to the natural hair using small beads or links, which are then clamped shut to secure the extension in place. I-tip hair extensions typically last up to 12 months, and need to be “adjusted” every 6-8 weeks.
In general, high quality hair extensions last longer than cheaper, lower quality options. Proper maintenance, such as using a sulfate-free shampoo, avoiding heat styling and using a wide-tooth comb, can also help prolong the life of your extensions.
